Pierre Rensonnet is one of the best and most successful Walloon players ever. He made the finals at GP Paris, the biggest limited event ever, losing against Arjan van Leeuwen from the Netherlands. You can regularly find him in PTQs or in European GPs hanging around with the Liège community. Pierre is especially known as a serious player who never forgives an opponent's mistakes but he is more than that..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Pierre, When did u start playing the game?  In 1997

How did you start MTG?  What did you like the most in the game? My brother in law showed me the game. I liked how I kept crushing him from the very beginning.

For you, is fun < competitive play or the other way around? At first it was for fun, at least for a few hours...

Your first tournament memories? A local tournament near Spa where I defeated casual players with a Oath of Druids deck from the net.

Oath of Druids

What was your first homebrew deck? A deck with 4 copies of good cards; where my opponents had singleton decks.

Your best deck ever in a tournament? Ravager with skullclamp!

Arcbound Ravager   Skullclamp

Your all-time favourite card? One of my very first cards, something like Teremko Griffin or Ardent Militia

Teremko Griffin  Ardent Militia

Style of play: Aggro/control/combo/agro-control/whatever  Control most of the time, lately more aggro.

Which format do you like the most? Whatever, I prefer when the field is known.

What do you like the most in the game in itself?  The thrill of tournament situations

What do you like the least about the game? Better players

You reached the finals of the Biggest limited Grand Prix ever. How did you prepare prior to that event? No praeparation for once. The sealed deck portion was known and I drafted like Sung advised me.

How was the feeling when you made top8? Released about the head judge call. It’s the last round and I’m probably already top 8.  A judge thought my opponent and I didn’t care about his ruling; a probable sanction was disqualification for both players. The head judge made an outstanding investigation there and found out what really happened, despite my attitude.

Were you disappointed of losing the finals or was it a good performance anyway? I felt that my deck was clearly superior to my opponent’s deck, but as the top 8 was the only goal there, I wasn’t disappointed.

Tell me about your teammate Sung Kocks and the Liège team? In the beginning I thought Sung was a cheater but he is just a very talented played. We spend very nice moments with the "Liège team" but we are far too lazy for competitive play.

Do you test a lot with them? Occasionally, but playtest sessions are everything but serious. It’s probably fine like that

You are known for being a harsh and serious player in tournament. Comments? In my beginnings, I lost many games to harsh players and unfavorable rulings; I took this attitude to prevent that kind of losses.

You had some clashes with some flemish players some time ago (the "shady player" reputation). What can you say about this? What do you want to say to the people who do not know you? My play style doesn’t speak for me.  I definitely need more sportsmanship however...But those things come with the age, no?

Player you respect the most in Belgium/Europe/World ?

Belgium (Walloon/flemish/brussels)  All Belgian who are in the gravy train.

Europe Gabriel Nassif

World. Shuuhei Nakamura; you should watch this guy playing. Last time in a sealed deck tournament, he sided in a full deck when he noticed his opponent sided in many cards against him…The head of his opponent when he realized: priceless

Player you are afraid of playing in Belgium/Europe/World? That’s a secret.

Which aspect is more important to you while playing Magic? Intuition/hard thinking/preparation? Adaptability.

Is Magic a big part of your life or just a hobby? Do you think still playing for a while? Magic  regularly takes a big part of my free time but there are huge beak periods. I think I’ll never be able to quit Magic; first PTQs after a break are so good!

What are your goals regarding the game? winning Nats? going to another Pro Tour? The only goals are Pro Tours but the slots are expensive. I can’t or I don't want to give that much time to the game.

What do you think of Modo? Do you play it a lot? It’s a convenient testing tool, I play regularly to prepare tournaments but I don’t really like it.

Are you a bad loser? Can you get really angry after a loss/bad play? Most losses come from misplays where I’m the one to blame. I try to move on as fast as possible.

How do you prepare yourself for big competitions? Who do you test with? Do you often test? Modo is my friend there.

Your best topdeck? Each time I drew Naya Charm during day 2 of GP Paris.

Naya Charm

Your worst “badbeat”? That one is for an opponent on Modo. It’s the final game for a random top 8, the match has been tremendous but he’s got the winning board and I have no hand. Then he decides to play his hand, including a final Soul Warden, with a pain land. Unlike us, Modo doesn't forget he was at 1 life. Try to figure out his feelings the second he’s trying to understand why it’s written ‘you lost’.

Comments on your Pro Tour Kyoto finish? The experience of a pro-tour was just great.

The most epic match in a big competition? My first PTQ final; it was a mirror against Timmy with a deck including Kagemaro, First to Suffer and Goryo's Vengeance. I kept drawing the nuts but unfortunately I never noticed it and failed epically. Sung probably cried that day.

Kagemaro, First to Suffer   Goryo's Vengeance

What do you like the most in competitive play? The thrill of important games.

Your best trip abroad? I cannot remember one bad trip abroad. I still have very good memories of GP Nottingham.

Who will be the Belgian Champ this year?   Marijn (just kidding)

Who will make the National team? Good players, I hope.

Who is the “new Belgian rising star”? Can Belgium put other players to the train? If that guy exist, he lives in Flanders.

What are your expectations in life?  If only I knew it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Maybe father, with a brand new house and everything.

Your favourite meal? A good steak!

Other interests in life? Hobbies? Sport? Bodybuilding.

Belgian players are usually....  confident

Walloon players are usually.... casual

Flemish players are usually… serious

Any nice website or band you like?  I listen to Cali at the moment.

Anything you would like to say to finish this article? This article is probably too long.

Thank you Pierre
