Dennis is one of the latest Belgian rookie players along with Branco Neirynck and Robbert Menten. Despite his young age, he is posting some strong finishes in national and international tournaments. He recently reached Top8 at GP Brighton (losing against Martin Juza in semis) and is one of the best standard constructed specialist at the moment. Watch out for this guy!

Hi Dennis, tell us about you! When did u start playing the game? I started playing 3 years ago

Which aspect of the game makes you play? It's not easy, fun and competitive.

Your first tournament memories? Junior superseries qualifier (JSS), played against Jason first round and made a draw. I could have probable won, but I didn't understand what jitte did.

Your first homebrew deck? The only constructed tournament I ever played with my own cards was at JSS finals in 2006. Some cards I remember from it: faith's fetters, Konda, lord of eiganjo, pillory of the sleeples, agent of masks and guardian of the guildpact. (all 1-offs and 2-offs)

Faith's Fetters   Konda, Lord of Eiganjo   Pillory of the Sleepless   Guardian of the Guildpact

Your best deck ever in a tournament?  /

Your all-time favourite card?  /

Style of play: Aggro/control/combo/agro-control/whatever. I've never played combo or agro at a tournament. And control only twice. I play decks like: RWG selfmade firemaneangel/loxodon hierarch and other goodies.dec (T2), Death cloud (Ext), Mana Ramp (T2) 4c cascade (T2)  Now I think of it all of my constructed decks ever contain Green.

What do you like the most in the game in itself?  It's not easy, fun and competitive.

What do you like the least about the game?  Opening a bad deck in sealed

Where can we play with you? Woodlandmages or online at magic-league

Player you respect the most in Belgium/Europe/World ?

Belgium – Branco/Jonathan because we usually go together

Europe - don't really know anyone personally

World - don't really know anyone personally

Player you are afraid of playing in Belgium/Europe/World?  Pascal Vieren, I've played him like 5 times (A guess) and I always lose.

Your worst experience (tournament, event)? JSS finals in New York, I went 0-3 drop :( (drop so I could draft a bit)

Which aspect is more important to you while playing Magic? Intuition/hard thinking/preparation? Preparation for constructed, I usually play all (most) of the deck a few times online, so I know what I'm up against.
For limited I'dd say intuition/experience, to build the best deck out of your pool or pick certain cards over other in draft.

Is Magic a big part of your life or just a hobby? In holidays it becomes a big part of my life, but during school/soccer I usually don't play that much (also because of the extended season, I don't really like ext)

What do you think of Modo? Did you play it a lot? I play at www.magic-league.com there are alot of good players there, it's free and you can test all decks without worriing about spending money.

What was the trigger which made you become one of the most successful Belgian player this year? Luck? Involvement? For constructed I'dd say good deck choice, (4c cascade) it's really such a good deck, it has lifegain, card advantage, alot of removal and the ability to do a lucky cascade to turn the matcha round :D + I have been able to avoid the worst matchup (cruel control) in the last 2 months (drawing twice against Xof)

For limited, I've also been pretty lucky on the GP, my decks where mediocre, but in the whole tournament none of my opponent played a baneslayer/ant queen/overrun/sleep/master of wild hunt

Baneslayer Angel  Ant Queen  Overrun  Sleep

Are you a bad loser? Can you get really angry after a loss/bad play? Only 1 time I got a bit angry and it was because I was playing against a crappy player, who made alot of mistakes, but he just draws perfect answer to mine.

How do you prepare yourself for big competitions? Who do you test with? Do you often test?  Test only mostly and with Branco and Jonathan

Your favourite format? Limited/std/legacy? Why? Standard, because it's the format I'm most familiar with.

Your best topdeck? Every topdeck that wins the game is equally good

Your worst “badbeat”? Semi's in Brighton :(    I have elite vanguard and 2 palace guard and my Juza has deadly recluse and a gorgon flailed uncicorn, somehow I manage to attack with my vanguard :s he blocks obviously and I'm like ?? what did I just do? Then he attacks with his unicorn into double palace guard and after combat he equips another creature. We both didn't notice the unicorn is dead now. After the match a judges asks us what happened because a spectator noticed it and asked a judge.

What do you like the most in competitive play? Playing well

Your best trip abroad? Going to New York with Jan VDB after winning JSS in 2007

Are you still playing in PTQ's? When the PTQ's start for next PT, yes.

Tell us about your performance at GP Brighton. How many byes did you have? 3 from a GPT

What was your sealed pool? What was your plan in top8? Sealed pool was an UW aggresive deck, it wasn't like superbad, but it was certainly below average. I never really have a plan untill I open the first pack.

Who is the “new Belgian rising star”? Some people might think it is actually you! However, you made recently some strong finishes beside GP Brighton....Me and Branco xD

What do think of your performance at Nationals this year? I was dissapointed I did 4-2 in limited, but my contructed I only got a 3-3 I really hoped to get 8-4. Like 5-1 in constructed and 3-3 in limited.

What were your results in standard and draft? 4-2 draft / 3-3 constructed

Who did you test with? Branco/Jonathan

Which deck did you play? Why?  Jund mana ramp, because I felt like it was one of the best decks. It only scooped to seismic assault deck.

Any good story from the Nats? Branco won :P

What are your expectations in life? Do better at school.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Teaching maths

Your favourite meal? Does pie count as a meal? If not I'd choose bicky burgers.

Your favourite book? The only book I've ever read without being forced is Harry Potter.

Other interests in life? Hobbies? Sport? I play soccer

Belgian players are usually....

Walloon players are usually....

Flemish players are usually....

I really have no idea what to say here

Any nice website or band you like? As if anyone cares :P

Anything you would like to say about you to finish this article?  I'dd like to thank everyone of woodlandmages, especially Jan Ver Eecke for introducing me to the game and lending me cards. Ruben Yde my personal driver to nearby tournaments :D and everyone who ever lend me cards.

Thank you Dennis!
