Name: Vincent "Shenz" GielingAge: 29 Occupation: EbenistHometown: BrusselsNumber of pro tours: someTop8’s in GP/PT: 1/0Pro Points: 35 Vincent Gieling is an old pro player from Brussels. He was part of the "ADN" team along with J-L D'Hondt, Nicolas Fournier, Antoine Rottiers about 10 years ago. He was once Belgian champion, three times runner-up, participated in Europeans and some Worlds. Also, Vincent reached top8 at GP Amsterdam in 1999 losing to Kai Budde in the quarters. Nowadays, Vincent is travalling across Europe with friends and quit more or less competitive Magic. He answered to these questions "in live" in Brussels where he stopped for two weeks before going abroad again________________________________________ Hi Vincent, When did u start playing the game? It was in 1995 in a comics shop. I played really competitively from 2000 to 2006 Which aspect of the game made you play for such a long time? The competitive aspect of tournaments. Your first tournament memories? It was a Type1 tournament at the Rotonde in Brussels a long time ago. I played an R/G aggro deck featuring channel/fireball without any moxen or lotus
Your best deck ever in a tournament? It was the "Lobo Tokyo" UB deck feat. lobotomies, merfolk looters, verdant force, nekrataal, animate dead, living deathg
Your all-time favourite card? Balance
Style of play: Aggro/control/combo/agro-control/whatever : /
What do you like the most in the game in itself? As said above, the competitive aspect, the fact of being with friends and spend a good time just playing. The draft evenings...
What do you like the least about the game? The competitive aspect can sometimes lead people not to be nice..
Where can we play with you? In OPB when I am in Belgium; Why did you quit Magic? I quit for the first time in 2000 because I went to university and lately, because I decided to go abroad for some time Player you respect the most in Belgium/Europe/World ?
Belgium – HugokenEurope - /World - / Player you are afraid of playing in Belgium/Europe/World? I don't know, really...ah yes! The mighty Johan Dewez!
What was your best experience regarding Magic? It was definitely GP Amsterdam 99, I reached the quarterfinals..I made a terrible mistake which made the board different after combat and lost eventually on it. Budde attacked me with a 4/4 and I blocked with a 4/4 protection from artifacts and I tapped an artifact creature card to give a +1/+1 to my scion but I couldn't target it ! g
GP Amsterdam 1999: top81 Kai Budde 2 Dirk Baberowski 3 André Konstanczer 4 Guido Pacifici 5 Bram Snepvangers 6 Janosch Kühn 7 Daniel Steinsdorfer 8 Vincent Gielinghttp://www.wizards.com/sideboard/article.asp?x=results/GPAMSTERDAM99 What was your best tournament overall? I finished 20th at PT New-York. It was Urza block Your worst experience (tournament, event)? it was Worlds2000 in Brussels. It was a big disappointment because i had a good deck (the replenish deck). Pierre Girodroux who played the same deck finished well with it while I was 2-4
Is Magic a big part of your life or just a hobby? It was a hobby and still enjoy playing it
What do you think of Modo? Did you play it a lot? never played on it.
Some advice for the newer players? Make a lot of friends and enjoy! Are you a bad loser? Can you get really angry after a loss/bad play? Not really
Your favourite format? Why? Draft because it involves skill
Who is the “new Belgian rising star”? I am not playing competitively enough to answer that. Your opinion on the "Nationals incidents" 10 years ago? It was Nationals at Wizards Arena; I played the lobo tokyo deck and it was the draft part of Nationals. I built my deck and went aside with Gilles Grandjean and we talked about our draft decks. It was a time when the rules were not clearly defined and we were not really considering it was a big cheating issue or whatever...There was a big quarrel and during that issue, Peter Gysemans felt bad and went to hospital..We had to replay that day2 later while I was doing well and of course, the next week, I dodn't perform well and missed Worlds... Which Nats did you win? I won a national title against Dominique Coene (who is a great guy) What are your expectations in life? Be happy, make friends, don't want to expect things, let just things come to you.
Were you particularly proud of playing in Worlds and in pro tours? Of course it was, it was a big achievement Where do you see yourself in 5 years? NO IDEA! Other interests in life? Hobbies? Sport? cycling, walking Belgian players are usually....niceWalloon players are usually....funny, warmFlemish players are usually…rigorous, hard to know them and to make contact with them Vincent's top4 in Nationals: 2007Fried MeuldersVincent GielingJeroen AgaKalin Veltchev | g The 2007 Belgian Nationals Top 8 |
